The Prison Hospital is a national somatic hospital led by general practitioners providing care to prisoners in Hämeenlinna. The activities of the men’s ward include multidisciplinary treatment and rehabilitation of somatic illnesses. The activities of the women’s ward include substance abuse psychiatry and rehabilitation. There is also a day hospital and post-clinical activities available for female patients.

Patients are referred to treatment from prisons by physicians in an order of urgency based on an assessment by a chief physician and from a civilian hospital as previously agreed. The Prison Hospital also includes an opportunity to outpatient gastroscopy and sigmoidoscopy examinations and consultation with medical specialists.

In addition to the chief physician, the Prison Hospital’s multiprofessional working group includes two heads of department, a psychologist, social worker, chief nursing officer, head nurse, 20 nurses, a physical therapist, occupational therapist, laboratory nurse, practical nurse/instruments attendant, and assisting personnel.
